LANSING, Mich. — Riverwalk Theatre has received a $43,116 grant from the Michigan Arts and Culture Council to support staff, remove barriers to participation, and improve the shared experience of producing live theatre.

This funding will expand access to the arts by transporting refugee individuals and families to upcoming productions, many for their first live theatre experience in the United States. By removing barriers such as transportation, unfamiliarity with public transit, and language challenges, Riverwalk Theatre is creating a more welcoming space that fosters connection, cultural understanding, and a sense of belonging.

The grant will also support professional development by enrolling Riverwalk’s Artistic Operations Manager in an Intimacy Professional Accelerator Program, building tools for consent-based, trauma-informed practices that create safer spaces for artists, volunteers, and staff throughout the greater Lansing theatre community.

In addition, these funds will help address important facility and infrastructure needs, including upgrades to audio equipment, repairs to lobby doors, replacement of scene shop heaters, and an acoustic study of our performance spaces.

“Support from the Michigan Arts and Culture Council plays a key role in sustaining arts organizations across the state,” said Board President Brian Farnham. “Ongoing arts appropriations help ensure that community-based theatres remain vital spaces where people come together, encounter different perspectives, and find common ground to build a stronger Michigan.”
